Née au XIIIe siècle en Hongrie, Élisabeth quitte sa famille dès l’âge de 4 ans pour aller vivre dans celle de son fiancé, Louis de Thuringe. Là-bas, sa charité précoce et son goût pour la prière et l’humilité ne sont pas au goût de tous. Néanmoins, soutenue par son mari, elle ne cessera de cultiver son amour des pauvres : distribution de nourriture, fondation d’hôpitaux, usage des fonds du château pour nourir la population en période de disette…

Sa charité scandalise et, à la mort de son mari parti en croisade, elle sera chassée avec ses enfants et connaîtra à son tour la misère. Réhabilitée, elle choisira de se retirer à Marbourg et fonde un nouvel hôpital où elle servira les malades jusqu’à la fin de sa vie, en 1231.

Les pélerins affluent alors sur son cercueil et de nombreux miracles de guérison ont lieu, y comprit la conversion de celui qui l’a chassée du château, quelques années plus tôt.
