Scripture and the Authority of God

Nicholas Thomas Wright

Since the Reformation, the churches resulting from this movement have considered the Bible as the only authoritative document to standardize the faith and life of the believer and the assembly. This shows the importance of the status of this book in the theology of the Protestant and Evangelical Churches, without forgetting the place it was able to find in the Catholic Church after Vatican II.

In French-speaking Protestantism, this status is today the subject of sometimes passionate debate. In this context, the translation of Tom Wright's book, which is a classic in the Anglo-Saxon world, is of great interest.

Thanks to a very rich point of view, combining historical, theological and philosophical knowledge, the author helps us to immerse ourselves in this question of the authority of the Scriptures. It thus allows the reader to renew his relationship with the biblical text, by putting dry critical rationalism and fundamentalist literalism back to back. By re-examining the place of tradition and that of reason, or by denouncing ideological uses of the Bible, Wright offers us enriching perspectives for a renewed personal and community reading.

About the author: Nicholas Thomas Wright is Research Professor of New Testament and Early Christianity at the University of St Andrews in Scotland. He is the author of nearly seventy books.
