Calming and brushing the horses, feeding them and cleaning the stables… Azélaïs worked well from morning until mid-afternoon. Her father still has irons to make, but she is of no use to him for that. She then risks asking him, in the softest possible voice, permission to go into the forest.

The farrier grumbles as he puts a log back into the hearth:
– Always going for walks in the woods… Tell me, do you go there alone? Do you meet friends there?
Azélaïs starts. She had anticipated his reluctance, but not that he would question her about her trips. She supposed he must know that she always went alone, ever since her mother died. She believed he trusted her despite this, while demanding that she return diligently before nightfall. From now on, there is Bog whom she sees almost on each of her excursions, and Lady Lysandra whom she also visits very often... But Azélaïs refrains from revealing their existence; one being a badger, the other an unknown healer. Her father would certainly not approve of these new woodland friends, so she simply answers him:
– No, I’m walking alone. I like to enjoy the calm of nature…
