Ce livre est écrit par Takashi Paul Nagai, radiologue japonais qui a survécu à la bombe atomique du 9 août 1945 à Nagasaki. Il raconte le récit des martyrs japonais, histoire émouvante et poignante de la foi et du don total de soi d’un petit groupe de paysans, derniers représentants de ce peuple que l’on appelait « les chrétiens cachés », qui avait su garder et transmettre secrètement sa foi pendant plus de deux cents ans, échappant à d’atroces persécutions de l’inquisition du gouvernement des samouraïs.
Déportés Au Pas de la Vierge, colline près de Tsuwano et soumis tous les jours à des tortures atroces, 37 d’entre eux sont morts martyrs parce qu’ils n’ont jamais voulu renier leur foi. Le diocèse d’Hiroshima a ouvert leur procès de canonisation en 2013.
C’est le dernier livre que Takashi Nagai a écrit, nous laissant comme testament spirituel, l’histoire de la foi et de ceux qui ont été fidèles jusqu’au bout.
