Né au début du premier millénaire, Léopold a très vite montré une foi hors du commun qui lui donnera le surnom de « dévôt ». Appelé à devenir Margrave, c’est-à-dire prince d’Autriche, à la suite de son père, il se montrera un seigneur juste avec les plus pauvres, exigeant avec les plus riches, généreux envers l’Église.

Marié et père de onze enfants, il fonda avec sa femme de nombreux monastères dont les très connus Klosterneuburg et Heiligenkreuz. Exemple pour chacun par sa fidélité à sa famille, sa charité envers son peuple et son assiduité à la prière, il sera vénéré à sa mort et de nombreux miracles ont lieu sur son tombeau. Il est aujourd’hui le saint patron de l’Autriche.
